Resisting the normalization of hypermasculine norms
Film screening: Men beyond war | Emancipator X Living Peace Institute
Emancipator and Living Peace Institute Goma warmly invite you to a roundtable discussion exploring how we can challenge and resist the normalization of hypermasculine norms and violence. The conversation will open with a screening of the documentary Men Beyond War, followed by reflections from Aloys Mahwa and Dr. Benoit Ruratotoye of the Living Peace Institute in Goma (DR Congo).
With extensive experience working with men and boys as both perpetrators and victims of war and violence, Aloys and Dr. Benoit will share insights into resisting harmful masculine norms through gender-transformative mental health approaches.
We are also pleased to welcome the documentary filmmaker Femke van Velsen and researcher and co-author of the Living Peace methodology Henny Slegh.
A space for exchange
The roundtable will bring together global perspectives, experiences, and practical insights on resisting violence and challenging the normalization of hypermasculine norms.
We invite you to join us for an open and meaningful conversation about how we can support alternative understandings of masculinity here and elsewhere, what works and why, how we can learn from each other and work together in building more peaceful and equitable communities.
We look forward to welcoming you.
Men Beyond War (2022) is a film about traumatized men in Eastern Congo; about their challenges, recovery, their resilience, their hope, and ability to reintegrate into their families and communities. We see how these men – who lived through extreme hardship and war – try to break the vicious cycles of violence in group therapy sessions.
The film was made for Living Peace Institute in Goma with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, and is used for community screenings in the Democratic Republic of Congo to talk about manhood, trauma and violence
Living Peace Institute (LPI) is a Congolese non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mental and psychosocial health of people in conflict areas to restore peace and stability. The film screening will be presented by
