One of the most important ingredients of human happiness is a sense of ownership and control over your life and your place in the world. There are many ways to attain this feeling. The most healthy of those are through knowing yourself, being rooted in strong social relations and sharing pain, doubts, vulnerabilities and other human experiences.
All of this, however, is not stimulated by traditional masculinity norms that men grow up with, that favor domination, competition, power, etc. This leaves men vulnerable to searching for control in other, less healthy and less effective ways: for instance through relying on rigid structures and truths, authority and authoritarianism at home, in politics, in regards to big societal questions like gender and climate change, and more.
In this evening we’ll dive into the gender and masculinity norms informing our search as human beings and the ways we try to find a sense of control. We’ll talk about a world on fire, the rise of fascism, the manosphere, endemic gender-based violence. So we will talk about others, but we will also talk about ourselves, what we recognize of this struggle for control, how we can be more wholesomely rooted in our ecosystems and how we can contribute to a world with less domination and more community.
We hope to see you there!
The evening will be in English and is open to all genders.
